A New Public Space for Women and Children in Kabul District 4

12th June 2019, Kabul. Kabul Municipality has started the construction of a new sports recreational park located in District 4. With an area of 12,116 m2, this park will be a new public space available for residents, kids, school students, especially for women, benefiting more than 3,000 families. The installations of the new park include a kids’ playground, a foot sale pitch, and a volleyball court. The new complex is equipped with a boundary wall, security fence, water well, and a water storage system. The installations will be irrigated and powered by a modern solar lighting system making.

During the inauguration ceremony, Mrs. Danish Sadid, Head of the Women Council of District 4 emphasized that “neighbors of this district did not have access to a public space, men, and women. This park will change the lives of our women as it is located in their living area, close to their houses”.

This project was selected by residents of District 4 through a process of public consultations in the framework of City for All (CFA), a flagship program of the Urban National Priority Program (UNPP). The creation of this park is part of the Strategic Nahia Action Plan (SNAP), which is a five-year strategy which provides an overview of the current urban situation and plans of the city; sets out the community’s common vision for local urban development; and includes Capital Investment Plans (CIPs) based on the priority projects identified by communities and aligned with government projects.

Ahmad Fahim Masoomi, Head of the Nahia (District) thanked UN-Habitat for the technical support in the development of this park.  “I am happy that today we are inaugurating this park together because this is your park and your people, should protect it and take care of it.” Mr. Masoomi said.

UN-Habitat is pleased to technically support this initiative as public spaces remain a crucial driver for social cohesion, improved quality of life and inclusiveness as enshrined in the New Urban Agenda. The new park is co-funded between Kabul Municipality and USAID through City for All with a total cost of $261,140.
