Kunduz, 20th August 2019. UN Habitat has delivered a school safety outreach campaign in Kunduz City on 20 August 2019, under the Afghanistan Urban Safety and Security Programme (AUSSP), in support of the Community Policing Directorate and the Ministry of Interior Affairs.

In this outreach campaign, delivered in the Shir Khan School of Kunduz’ 2nd District, 110 students from 5th and 6th grades participated and learnt about traffic signs, first-aid kits, unexploded ordnance and land mines, and safety evacuations for emergency situations such as fires, floods and earthquakes. The students received an awareness package containing pens, pencils and notebook with the message and logo of MoIA.

Mohammed Omar, Director of the Shir Khan School, welcomed the program and said: “Our children need to be safe, and this kind of activity makes it possible for everybody, especially for children, to keep themselves safe in times of emergency. In this program, important and helpful information has been provided by the Community Policing Unit to the students.”

The 1st Lieutenant Feraidoon Majbouryar from the Kunduz Community Policing Unit led the safety campaign. He noted that “the 119 police hotline is operational for 24 hours, so that people can contact the police if they encounter any security problems in the area. The police will take actions. The people should also cooperate with the police on suspicious acts.”

Mukhtar, a fifth-grade student, described his involvement in the safety outreach campaign program: “The police taught us how to cross a road, not to touch unknown objects and so on. They said if we have to call the police or inform adults if we see any suspicious people or matters in the area.”

School Safety Outreach Campaigns will continue till the end of 2020, covering 320 schools in total across 8 cities: Kabul, Mazar-e-Sharif, Herat, Jalalabad, Kunduz, Farah, Nili and Bamyan.
