UN-Habitat and UNHCR signed a Data Sharing Agreement to improve support to the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to address refugee returnees and internal displacement

Kabul, 9th December 2018. UNHCR and UN-Habitat country offices in Afghanistan have collaborated in tackling the complex migration and displacement dynamics faced by the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. Both agencies are focused on managing the reintegration of Afghans who have returned and those displaced to urban settlements by the continued conflict.

Returns are taking place in the midst of increased internal displacement and protracted instability in Afghanistan, requiring the adoption of best practices and strengthening of the humanitarian–development nexus approach that promotes self-reliance.

Recognising that a humanitarian response alone is insufficient, this humanitarian-development partnership will facilitates improved UN coordination and collective processes that will establish improved durable solutions strategies more sensitive to displacement.

The Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan continues towards improving the security of tenure and access to land for Afghans that have returned under precarious conditions. Both tenure and access to land are critical to implementing income-generating activities in settlement sites and the progress towards durable solutions.

UN-Habitat and UNHCR will continue to support the Afghan Government to deliver tangible, durable solution, ensuring that no one is left behind.
