Empowering Afghan Women has changed my life

Mazar-e-Sharif, 16 April 2018- Miss Khadija Hussaini, 25 years old, is a resident of Mazar-e-Sharif. She holds a university degree in Journalism. Despite of being highly educated, she experienced difficulties in finding a decent job according to her qualifications.

Today she is very happy to be a community mobilizer in one of UN-Habitat’s programmes.  Clean and Green Cities (CGC) is USAID funded programme with technical assistance from UN-Habitat. “Training female beneficiaries of this programme is very relevant to my education background” she said.  Khadija further explained that this job has given her the opportunity to meet with inspiring co-workers as well as Wakili Gozars (community chiefs) and residents of the area.

“I am glad that I spent part of my salary on my sister’s education as well as supporting my family. This programme brought lots of positive changes in my life. I learnt a lot from the women I was working with in CGC programme” she said.

“One of my wishes was to always to be in interaction with the Afghan people and the society. This programme made it possible triggering the beginning of my career” she said.

“During my 3 months’ tenure with CGC, I had lots of achievements and great experience. I got the power and courage to speak. I learnt things that I couldn’t learn during 12 years of school and 4 years of university”, Khadija mentioned.

Clean and Green Cities Programme comes under the National Unity Government’s (NUG) “Jobs for Peace” initiative. This programme is creating livelihood opportunities for vulnerable families, women-headed households, internally displaced, returnees and urban poor in twelve cities of Afghanistan.
