Improving Urban Basic Services in Herat

Herat, 15th April 2018. Mr. Mohamed Ali is a resident of Herat. He is very grateful to the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and to the Government of the Netherlands for paving the streets of his neighborhood in Herat.

“As our streets are concreted, now we can easily walk without getting our shoes and clothes muddy and dirty, especially during the rainy season. We are very grateful to the donors of this project and to UN-Habitat for their technical support”, Mohamed said.

Mr. Mohamed poses proudly in his neighborhood, showing us the new paved streets.

With the technical support of UN-Habitat, the Afghanistan Urban Peacebuilding Programme is improving the delivery of urban services as well as strengthening partnerships between government, communities, and civil society for promoting safety and security in the country.

This project has been completed in close cooperation with the local residents and the Community Development Councils (CDC). The decision to pave the streets was taken by the community in the CDCs. A total of 9.278m of streets have been concreted.

“We are also very happy because this project has installed sign boards, waste bins in our neighborhood, and street addressing. Our streets are clean and well labelled. A clean environment will help our residents to live a healthy life”, Mohamed concluded.
