NEW URBAN AGENDA

The United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III), an inclusive United Nations event which takes place every 20 years, was held in Quito, Ecuador from 17th October until 20th October, 2016. 30,000 people, among them 10,000 international participants from 167 countries, 16,500 national participants, and 3,500 working staff were accredited at the Conference – historic number of participation.

During the conference, the UN member states adopted the New Urban Agenda (NUA) which calls for sustainable urban development. The NUA calls for sustainable urbanization, provision of basic services and infrastructure, adequate housing, zero discrimination, inclusivity, safer and greener cities and economically viable cities.

Taking this opportunity, we would like to share the result of  The United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III) and the New Urban Agenda which was adopted in the Conference.

Government of Afghanistan’s implementation of the New Urban Agenda

The government of Afghanistan in its implementation of the New Urban Agenda developed an Urban National Priority Programme (U-NPP), which sets urban sector’s priorities for the next 10 years (2016-2025). U-NPP was developed in close coordination among urban sector stakeholders led by the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing with technical assistance from UN-Habitat. In essence, all stakeholders including line ministries, think tanks, civil society, communities, women, youth, and academicians were consulted in the development of this urban policy blueprint. More than 32% women were consulted.
